Whether you're interested in pursuing a career in local government or just looking to gain experience in public service, we encourage you to apply!

Undergraduate Internships

The Broome County Clerk’s Office has TWO undergraduate level student internships each semester.

One internship will focus on basic office operations of a face paced government office with focuses on clerical work, data entry, and filing. There will be occasional opportunities to participate in special projects and events as they occur (meetings with other departments, naturalization ceremonies, etc). All undergraduate students are eligible for this unpaid internship.

The second internship will focus on marketing and promotions for a government agency. Projects will include the development of PSAs and educational videos, and increasing the office's social media visibility. While unpaid, students are welcome to use the final work product in their professional portfolios. The specialized internship is available for undergraduate students majoring in marketing.

Graduate Internship

The Broome County Clerk’s Office has ONE paid graduate level student internships (usually offered during the summer).

Graduate interns can expect to gain experience in policy and financial analysis, strategic planning, and grant writing. Projects may include but are not limited to:

  • Policy development: evaluating federal, state, and county legislation and researching how policy initiatives impact us locally.
  • Financial analysis: reviewing the office's revenues and expenditures and preparing for the annual budget submission.
  • Strategic planning: reviewing and improving office procedures and efficiencies and preparing longer-term goals.
  • Grant writing: researching new grant funding streams and writing grant applications.

Current graduate students in an MPA program are eligible for this paid internship.

Compensation

There is no financial compensation for either of the undergraduate internships. However, students are eligible to receive academic credit for their internship, as per their University guidelines. If you wish to receive academic credit, please apply as early as possible. This will ensure there is enough time for the interview process, planning for academic internship requirements, and the two-week background check process.

The County budget does include funding for one paid graduate-level internship that is normally offered during the summer.

The Broome County Clerk's Office is open 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Availability to work during those business hours is a requirement. None of these internships are "remote" and the expectation is all interns will be work in the office and abide by various Broome County policies.
