Lead Poisoning Prevention Program Intern

Pay Rate: Unpaid Full-time
College level background in science and/or environmental science. Skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Outlook. Interest in Public Health, Environmental Health, issues that affect children, and Law. Willingness to learn. Opportunity to learn about the inner workings of a government agency.
Assists Lead Risk Assessors with visual assessments, dust sampling, XRF inspection of housing units. This will include drawing floor plans, taking notes and photographs. Assists staff with other program educational activities and events as needed. Assists in writing reports and maintenance of records of lead hazard remediation progress. Interacts with owners and tenants of housing units. Special projects based on the goals of the program and internship are considered.

The work involves responsibility for the administration of the Broome County Department of Public Works which includes the divisions of Highway, Administration, Engineering, Security, Sanitation (Drainage, Sanitation, Water Supply), Buildings and Grounds, and Parks, Recreation & Youth Services. Work is performed under the general direction of the County Legislature and County Executive or the Deputy County Executive with wide leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgement in carrying out the policies and objectives of the department. Administrative supervision is exercised over the work of all department employees.
The Commissioner shall be appointed on the basis of his administrative experience and his qualifications for the duties of the office. *In accordance with Article IX (A901) of the Broome County Administrative Code and (C901) of the Broome County Charter.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Incumbents in this position are required by the County Legislature to reside within the County of Broome, OR an adjoining county (TIOGA, CORTLAND, DELAWARE OR CHENANGO) at all times during their employment in the title.
Professional Engineer preferred.
SPECIAL NOTE: Incumbent is designated as an Emergency Operations Center staff member by the County Executive.
