Ways to Reduce Your Risk of Becoming a Victim

Even though no one can predict what the future will hold, it's always a good strategy to plan ahead. When we plan our meals we are able to shop wisely and have the ingredients on hand when we are ready to make the meal. Planning makes our lives easier.

In this same spirit, we need to plan for our golden years when day-to-day living may not be as easy for us. Think about being 86: Will you be able to get to your doctor, the grocery store, the bank? Many elders can't do this on their own and need the assistance of loved ones or other supports.

Have you thought about who you will be able to count on when you may need help? Or who you could trust to help with financial matters?

Elders who develop a plan decrease the risk that they will be victimized as they grow older. Five risk factors have been identified. Seniors who are socially isolated, depressed or forgetful, in poor physical health, over age 80, or women are at the greatest risk for victimization.

Ask yourself these questions:

What might I need help with in the future?
Who might I be able to depend on?
What agencies and services are there in the community that might provide assistance?
Create a list of relatives and friends that you can trust. Would any of these people be willing to step in and help you if needed? Have a frank discussion with the people you trust to see how they might feel about helping you in the future.

Avoid making emotional decisions. Our love for a friend or family member doesn't necessarily make them the right person for the job that needs to be done. Not everyone is cut out to be a "helper" and not everyone is trustworthy. Financial exploitation of the elderly--even by family members--is the fastest growing form of victimization of the elderly population. Consider friends and family who have an even temper and who can put others' needs ahead of their own.

By following the suggestions above, your wishes will have been expressed and plans that you have made can be set in motion for your care when the time of need occurs.
