Spiedie Fest Celebrated at Senior Centers
The Spiedie Fest is coming soon! Get in the mood to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this grand tradition by visiting one of the Broome County senior centers on Friday, July 31st. We will satisfy your taste buds with our version of a chicken spiedie sandwich and ice cream topped with strawberries—and the cost is only $2.50.
Hot air balloons will be the theme of the day at most centers. This might include a challenge to learn some of the buzz words of that sport. It’s a chance to increase your knowledge and impress your friends.
Since a craft fair is part of the Spiedie Fest, two centers are holding fairs on July 31. The craft fair at the Northern Broome center runs from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm; at the Eastern Broome center it’s from 1 to 3 pm. The Oak Street center will have entertainment by Charles Russell at 11 am and a balloon launch after lunch. The Johnson City center will host a demonstration of the new voting machines from 1 to 4. All activities are open to the entire community.
There are lots of other activities this summer. There’ll be an open house at the First Ward center on August 12 and one at the Eastern Broome center on August 21. This is a great way to see what they have to offer. Take a tour, join an activity, and enjoy a hot lunch. Do this with a friend, your son or daughter, or your parent. It’s a few hours well spent.
All centers are air-conditioned and you’re welcome to spend time at any center keeping cool on hot days. Several show movies and serve popcorn during their regular hours; it’s a great way to beat the heat. Check Senior News for movie locations and dates.
Spiedies are year-round fare in Broome County and that includes senior centers. If you miss this year’s spiedie luncheon on July 31, don’t worry. Spiedies are a regular on the menu. To make a reservation for lunch on the 31st, call a senior center near you by noon on July 30.
