Powerful Tools for Caregivers
Caring for someone with a chronic illness such as dementia, heart disease or stroke can be stressful physically, emotionally and financially. This fall, Broome County Office for Aging is will begin offering a 6 week course: Powerful Tools for Caregivers. The course helps non-professional caregivers of any age develop new skills that will improve their lives and their ability to continue to provide care.
The course will help caregivers reduce stress, improve self-confidence, make tough decisions, communicate better, and locate helpful resources and tips on how to balance caregiving with other responsibilities—including your responsibilities to yourself.
The course will be offered at two different times and locations. Classes for both locations meet on Tuesdays and will start October 6 and run through November 10.
- One class series will meet from 3:00 to 5:30 pm in the Broome County Council of Churches building at 3 Otseningo Street in Binghamton.
- The second class series will meet from 1:00 to 3:30 pm at the Broome West Senior Center at 2801 Wayne Street in Endwell.
Pre-registration is required; call 778-2411 or email ofa@co.broome.ny.us to register. There is a suggested donation of $20 which covers the cost of The Caregiver Helpbook— a valuable take-home reference that reinforces the tools you'll learn in class. If you are not able to attend the course at this time, but would like to attend in the future, call 778-2411 now to assure that you are contacted when the course is offered again.
Powerful Tools for Caregivers is a program of the Legacy Foundation and is being supported locally by The Good Shepherd Foundation, Broome County Council of Churches, Lourdes Parish Nurse Program, United Health Services Stay Healthy Center, and the Office for Aging.
