Broome County Senior Games: Fun, Fitness and Friends!

It’s time for the annual Broome County Senior Games! A category that was new last year, men’s 70+ softball, had such a great response that it will be back again. And two new categories have been added to the games: women’s softball and women’s tennis.

You have the opportunity to play in a variety of sports in this year’s games. And you don’t have to be an experienced player to participate; some of the games are so easy to learn that you can start now and be ready to play!

Ping pong (sometimes called table tennis) is a way to experience the fast pace of tennis without the strain of running around on a big court. It is played on a table and involves less movement and less strength than tennis. It is very easy to learn and exciting to play.

Pickleball, a slowed down version of tennis played with wooden paddles and a plastic perforated ball, is also a popular game. It is also easy to learn and it is played on a badminton size court with makes it fast hitting, but less strenuous than tennis.

And for those people who enjoy the fast paced and strenuous game of tennis, there is a tennis doubles events.

Floor shuffleboard is both fun and exciting; this game also gives you the opportunity to play as part of a team.

Although new events have been added, old favorites like basketball, billiards, bowling, golf and horseshoes are still included.

The purpose of the Senior Games is to give people who are 55 years and older the opportunity to stay fit while enjoying outdoor and indoor activities, meeting new people and just having fun!

If you are interested in participating in the games, coming just to watch or if you would like to volunteer at an event please call Rita at 778-2411. You can print off an application online (just go to the tab for Senior Games) or pick-up an application at any of your local senior centers.
