BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Executive, Jeff Kraham announced today that the Broome County Division of Solid Waste Management has received the National Association of Counties' Achievement Award for its Electronics Recycling Program.

Implemented by the Division of Solid Waste Management in 2003, the Electronics Recycling Program provides residents from Broome and Tioga Counties the opportunity to dispose of old or unwanted electronics, free of charge, three days per month at the hazardous waste collection facility in the Town of Nanticoke. In just over one year 45.46 tons of electronics have been collected from 978 Broome County residents and 35 Tioga County residents.

"The success of this program has been great for Broome County. Over 45 tons of electronic waste has been kept out of the environment and out of the landfill," said County Executive Jeff Kraham. Not only do residents have a cleaner environment but they also have more money in their pockets, thanks to the free disposal policy," said Mr. Kraham.

The National Association of Counties' Achievement Award Program is a non-competitive program that recognizes counties for improving the management of and services provided by county government. Since the program's inception in 1970, the Achievement Award program has honored hundreds of county government initiatives that have improved service delivery, achieved greater cost efficiency, provided finer customer service, and helped to develop a better-trained work force. In addition, the award winning programs have provided the National Association of Counties and its membership with an extensive database of successful county programs. This year's award winners represent 27 states and 106 counties.
