Heat Safety Tips and List of Cooling Centers

Heat Awareness

(BINGHAMTON, NY) –The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Heat Advisory, which is in effect from 11 AM to 8 PM EDT Tuesday. Heat Index Values will be 95 to 104 Tuesday afternoon, due to temperatures in the upper 80s to lower 90s and dew points in the lower 70s. Peak heat index is expected to be Tuesday afternoon. The Heat Index is a measure of how hot it feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature. Very warm and humid conditions will continue into Wednesday for much of the area. It is a good time to think about heat safety measures to prevent possible heat illnesses.

Here are some heat safety tips:

  • A best practice is to spend some time each day in an air conditioned space: your residence, a neighbor’s, or a public or retail building (see list of Cooling Center sites below) or go to: https://www.health.ny.gov/environmental/weather/cooling/countycenters.htm
  • Unless your doctor has specifically told you not to, drink lots of water.
  • Perform heavy outdoor labor during the early morning or evening.
  • If you know older people who live alone, check in with them in person or by phone.
  • Don’t leave children or pets unattended in vehicles. Vehicles interior temperatures can place children and pets in danger.
  • Try to stay in the shade when outdoors
