Broome County Executive Announces Upgrades to BC Transit

BINGHAMTON, NY – Broome County Executive Jason Garnar joined Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, Senator Fred Akshar and members of the Broome County Legislature to announce upgrades to BC Transit.

Thanks to Federal and State funding, Broome County recently purchased seven state-of-the-art and high efficiency busses to join the BC Transit Fleet. Garnar announced that thanks to additional funding Broome County would be purchasing eight more of the same busses.

“An investment in public transportation is an investment in our stores, restaurants and businesses”, said Garnar. “Without the help from our State, Federal and local partners we would not be able to replace our aging fleet.”

The total cost of the original purchase was $3,043,495. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) provided $1,533,939 or 50.4% of the price. The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) provided $1,277,123 or 42% and Broome County contributed the remaining $232,433 which was 7.6% of the purchase.

The additional eight busses will cost $3,541,392. The FTA is providing $1,024,665 (28.9%), NYSDOT is providing $2,371,042 (66.9%) and the local cost is $145,825 (4.1%).

The new busses were first used to shuttle patrons to the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open where they were highly received primarily based on the bright, clean interiors and the environmental controls.

The environmental impact will be improved as well as lower the operating costs of each bus with the anticipated cost to drop from more than $1 per mile to 55 cents per mile.

BC Transit provides 2.2 million rides per year which is enough to drive around the world 100 times.
