BOAC’s Drug Free Communities to Host Family Fun Nights in the Parks

(ENDICOTT, NY) Starting August 2, Drug Free Communities, a local drug prevention initiative under the Broome Opioid Abuse Council, is hosting Family Fun Nights in local parks for youth and their families in the community. These events take place in area parks and will include free family-friendly activities such as entertainment, arts and crafts, fun snacks, games and giveaways.

"Keeping youth drug-free and safe is our goal," said Kara Skellett, Drug Free Communities Coordinator. "It's about bringing the community together. So many people want to make a difference and together we can."

The family nights are part of the coalition's broader effort to make Broome County a better place to live. Founded in 2014, the Broome Opioid Abuse Council (BOAC) is a collaboration of agencies, organizations and school districts in the community.

"We work to create opportunities for supportive, healthy, drug-free youth, families, and neighborhoods in Broome County by strengthening existing partnerships between traditional and non-traditional prevention teams," added Skellett.

The BOAC’s Drug Free Communities is funded by the federal Drug Free Communities Support Program Grant, through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP).
