Broome County Executive Proclaims "Child Hunger Awareness Week"

Broome County Executive Proclaims

Child Hunger Awareness Week

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar proclaimed this “Child Hunger Awareness Week”. With schools getting ready to close for the summer many children will lose access to the free or discounted meals from the cafeteria.

The rate of food insecurity in Broome County for an individual is 13.8%. For local children that rate jumps to 21.8%.  The child poverty rate in Broome County is 24.3%, which is almost 10,000 children.

The main concerns of a child should be completing their homework and playing with their friends,” said Garnar. “Not avoiding starvation.”

Representatives from Catholic Charities, CHOW, VINES and BOCES  joined the County Executive for the proclamation. These groups continue to work for the children of Broome County.
