Broome County Hosts “Emergency Management Training Course”

On Thursday, April 27 Broome County Office of Emergency Services and New York State Office of Emergency Management held an “Emergency Management Certification and Training Course” at the Floyd L. Maines Veteran’s Memorial Arena in Binghamton, NY.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar and Broome County Deputy Executive Kevin McManus were joined by about twenty others from within Broome County Government as well as leaders from local municipalities. This training is required each year to allow counties to receive Homeland Security funding.

Topics covered included:

·         Emergency Management in NYS & the Role of Chief Elected Official

·         Emergency Operations – Understanding the Process

·         Article 2B – Legal Authority & Responsibilities of Elected Officials

·         Disaster Recovery Awareness

The course was taught by Broome County Director of Emergency Services Michael Ponticiello, NYS Office of Emergency Management Regional Director Thomas McCartney and other experts in the field.

“I think it’s really important for leaders in government to attend trainings like this on a regular basis. Especially in Broome County, where we have had 16 Presidential Disaster Declarations since 1954, leaders at all levels need to be prepared. That’s why we invited the local municipalities to attend and I was happy to see that some of them did,” said Jason Garnar.

“It is important that our elected officials at all levels of government become educated on their responsibilities and duties especially when it comes to Public Safety. This training is a great way for them to do that and I’m pleased we were able to host it in Broome County,” said Michael Ponticiello.
