Binghamton, NY - Broome County Executive Debbie Preston joined Broome-Tioga Workforce Director Jim Tripp and Tom Crowley, owner of Crowley Fabrication, to talk about job training programs available in Broome County.
One of those programs is the On the Job Training program, which allows companies to hire new employees and the County will reimburse the employers 50% of the wages paid to new hires for the duration of training.
“We have over 2,000 unfilled jobs in Broome County and I often hear that we don’t have people who are trained to fill those jobs,” says Broome County Executive Debbie Preston. “This program gives an incentive to local companies to hire people and train them, while getting money back for training them. This is a win-win for local companies and people looking for work.”
Several companies, including Crowley Fabrication and Willow Run Foods take advantage of this program.
“This is a great program, especially for a small business like ours,” says Tom Crowley, president of Crowley Fabrication. “There aren’t many people who are trained to work with our machinery, but thanks to this program, we are able to hire local people and train them with the help of Broome County.”
“The On the Job Training grants for which we are able to qualify, helps significantly in managing our expenses,” says Carol Wallis, Vice President of Human Resources for Willow Run Foods. “We are always in need of drivers for which there is an extreme shortage. With the help of the OJT program, we are able to offer paid training for many individuals out of work helping them to re-establish themselves in a lucrative and very stable career. “
Since July 1st of 2014, the program has helped train 208 people for 73 employers with total contracts of nearly $658,000.
Broome-Tioga Workforce also has a job recruitment program that helps match local people looking for work with local companies.
Since July 1st of 2014, Broome-Tioga Workforce has hosted 226 employer recruitments at it’s facility on Front Street, participated in 14 job fairs and also posts job openings for several employers in the community.
