Shape Up Broome! The Healthiest Challenge of 2007

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Broome County Health Department's Steps to a HealthierNY program is helping to coordinate the first ever county-wide healthy lifestyle team challenge—Shape Up Broome. This challenge aligns with the Steps program goals of reducing obesity and diabetes by increasing physical activity and eating healthier. To mark the first week of the challenge, there will be a news conference Friday, June 22, 2007 at Confluence Park in Binghamton beginning at 10 a.m. and ending with a preview of a "Shape Up Broome Boot Camp" physical activity demonstration.

Shape Up Broome is a team fitness and weight loss challenge designed to increase physical activity levels and provide skill development and social support for healthy lifestyle habits. The challenge is two months long and incorporates many ways to earn credit toward a grand prize. A unique aspect of the program is to promote long-term changes in lifestyle choices (healthy eating and regular physical activity) that foster maintenance of weight loss.

"Being unhealthy hurts us in so many ways," remarks Broome County Executive Barbara Fiala. "Making healthier food choices, living actively, and being tobacco free can have a tremendous social and economic impact on individuals, families and communities," states Executive Fiala.

Broome County residents are asked to gather friends, adult family members and co-workers to join their weight loss team. Teams must have at least two members and can have a maximum of five. Once a team is assembled, a team leader should be designated. The team leader is asked to log on to to register their team, enter their team name and then invite the other members to join their team (by entering the member's e-mail addresses).

Several events will take place each week that will help foster team involvement and encourage participants to stay motivated. Incentive prizes will also be given out throughout the challenge and a grand prize spa package to Traditions at the Glen compliments of Excellus BlueCross BlueShield and Security Mutual will be awarded at the end of the challenge.

Shape Up Broome is coordinated by Steps to a HealthierNY and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. Key sponsors of the program are: Greater Binghamton Chamber, Clear Channel Radio, Channel 34, Downtown Binghamton Business Association, Lourdes Hospital, Security Mutual, United Health Services and the YMCA.
