Broome County Residents Save Over $5 Million With Prescription Discount Card Program

Broome County Executive Debbie Preston along with Broome County Legislator Joseph S. Sanfilippo (D-Binghamton) today announced BroomeCounty residents had surpassed a milestone $5 million in prescription drug savings, through enrollment in the ProAct Prescription Discount Card Program. BroomeCounty enrolled in the program in September of 2009.

“Prescriptions for BroomeCounty residents are essential to the wellbeing and overall health of our community,” said Preston. “I applaud former County Executive Barb Fiala and Legislator Joe Sanfilippo for their hard work in instituting this program. In just three years our residents have surpassed $5 million in savings.  I hope that more and more of our residents will enroll in this important program.”

"I am absolutely thrilled with the success of this program and the fact that we have reached the $5 million milestone in savings for residents within 3 years of implementation,” said Sanfilippo. “Given our economic situation, this program could not have been more timely. I would like to thank all members of the planning committee in late 2008 for their diligent effort which resulted in this success and my fellow Legislators in 2009, which were so supportive of the enabling Resolution that authorized this program."

The Broome County Discount Card Program covers every medication, including some pet medications. Cards are accepted at every pharmacy within BroomeCounty and at more than 60,000 pharmacies nationwide, ensuring easy access to these valuable savings. The program has been made available to residents at absolutely no cost to BroomeCounty or to the tax payers, and has no fees associated with filling a prescription with the card.

Broome County is one of over seventy counties across the country who have committed to helping lower prescription drug costs for uninsured residents by endorsing the ProAct Discount Card Program.

Local pharmacies have filled more than 151,000 prescriptions at an average savings of 48% per prescription, saving residents $5,024,921 in just three years. The Discount Card Program saves residents an average of 10-20% on their brand name medications and 20-70% on their generic medications.
