Broome County Named Leader In Suicide Prevention

(BINGHAMTON, NY) – Broome County Executive Debbie Preston today announced Broome County is a 2013 Suicide Prevention Center of New York Excellence in Suicide Prevention Awardee, for its efforts to overcome the serious public health issue of suicide.

“Suicide prevention is a priority in Broome County; as the need to help individuals and families deal with this issue increases, so have our efforts to keep our community safe and healthy,” said Broome County Executive Debbie Preston. “The latest available statistics reveal that suicide is the 10^th leading cause of death for Americans; Broome County is dedicated to decreasing suicide rates as we increase outreach and help for those who are at risk.”

Make A Difference Day At The Broome County Dog Shelter

(BINGHAMTON, NY) – Broome County Executive Debbie Preston and Front Street Dog Shelter Manager Kelly Conlon are requesting Broome County residents take part in the Second Annual Make a Difference Day at County-owned Front Street Dog Shelter.

The County will hold an Open House at the Dog Shelter on Saturday, June 1st, 2013 from 10am-2pm. Visitors will have the opportunity to drop off supplies, register to become a volunteer, adopt a dog or simply stop by to visit or walk a dog.

Two breeds of puppies will also be on hand to meet the public.

Broome County Cracks Down On Underage Drinking

(CHENANGO, NY) – Broome County Executive Debbie Preston and Sheriff Dave Harder today announced a collaborative effort between Broome County STOP-DWI, the Sheriff’s Office, Mirabito Energy Products, the KYDS Coalition and local Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Chapters to effectively address underage drinking issues in Broome County.

“Our children are our most valuable resource; so we must provide them the tools to become the leaders of tomorrow. They need to understand that illegally abusing substances leads to an unproductive future of dependency,” said Broome County Executive Debbie Preston. “As parents, teachers, coaches, mentors, friends and community leaders it is our responsibility to educate and lead by example. This is a community problem which requires a community solution.”
