Parents Encouraged to have Installation of Child Safety Seats Inspected

Child Safety Seat - Christine Muss

BINGHAMTON, NY – Did you know that 87% of the car seats in Broome County are installed incorrectly or have some form of misuse? Child safety seats can sometimes be difficult to install. Car seat and vehicle manuals/instructions can be confusing to parents and caregivers. And of course, the child passenger safety laws and guidelines are always changing.  Child safety seats are 71% effective in preventing injury for infants and 54% for toddlers but only if they are installed correctly.  If you’re not sure your car seat is safe or properly installed, it is a good idea to have a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician take a look at it.

Parents and caregivers can set up an appointment with a Certified Technician at the Broome County Child Passenger Safety Fitting Station. The fitting station provides FREE child safety seat inspections for families and caregivers as well as education and guidance on child passenger safety. Parents may also receive a FREE replacement child safety seat in the event their seat is expired, recalled or deemed unsafe.
Car seat inspections are conducted only on the dates and times listed below. Your vehicle, your child and your car seat must be present at the time of the appointment. If available, please bring your car seat manual and your vehicle manual. Appointments can range anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour depending on the number of car seats being checked and the compatibility of your seats with your vehicle.
