Local Community Organizations Support Reduction of Tobacco Advertising

BINGHAMTON, NY Several local organizations have signed policies supporting the removal of tobacco advertising at tobacco retailers and/or ceasing the sale of tobacco in supermarkets and pharmacies. This step is part of an initiative coordinated by the Tobacco Free Broome Coalition.

Family Enrichment Network, Opportunities for Broome/Headstart, Boys and Girls Clubs of Binghamton and Western Broome, and the Broome County Medical Society recognize the influence that tobacco marketing has on enticing youth to smoke.   Eliminating tobacco products and advertising in businesses that children frequent is an important step in de-normalizing tobacco.
Research has shown that tobacco company marketing, including advertising where tobacco is sold, more than doubles the odds that a child will start smoking. Each day, tobacco industries lure over 1,000 youth into becoming regular daily smokers.
