Broome County Announces 2010-2011 Flu Clinic Schedule

BINGHAMTON, NY– The Broome County Health Department and Broome County Office for Aging are urging area residents to protect themselves and others from the flu by getting vaccinated. They will be offering flu vaccinations to county residents at clinics beginning October 18, 2010.
Flu symptoms are usually more severe than cold symptoms. They come on quickly and are typically marked with fever, headache, chills, sore throat, and sometimes diarrhea and vomiting, seen more commonly in young children. “We can never predict what a flu season will be like. What we do know is flu is a serious virus that can lead to pneumonia and put you at risk for other flu-related complications. The single best way anyone can protect themselves from getting the flu is to get immunized,” said Claudia Edwards, Broome County Public Health Director. “Other steps individuals can take to stay healthy during flu season are to wash your hands frequently, use tissues and dispose of them, eat a balanced diet, get plenty of rest, exercise (it decreases stress which can lower your immune system), and avoid people who are ill,” she further stated.
The flu vaccine contains three virus strains. This year, the flu vaccine contains the H1N1 strain of 2009 and two other virus strains.
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is recommending routine influenza vaccination for all persons six months and older this flu season.
At the clinics, residents will pay $20 for the seasonal flu vaccine. Pneumonia shots for Medicare Part B recipients aged 65 and older will be offered at Broome County Health Department sponsored clinics (*) only. There will be no out of pocket fee for the flu or pneumonia shots for Medicare Part B recipients.

Parents are advised to seek flu shots for children at their regular medical provider. Children under the age of three receive a different dosage of the vaccine than adults and, depending on the age of the child, may require a second dose of the vaccine.
Residents can call the Broome County Health Department Influenza Line at 778-3911, Option 2, to hear a recording of the current clinic schedule or log onto the Broome County Health Department website at www.gobroomecounty.com/hd/flu.
