Broome County Health Department to Hold Seasonal Flu Clinic

BINGHAMTON, NYThe Broome County Health Department has received the remainder of its seasonal flu vaccine and has scheduled a clinic for Monday, November 23, 2009, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The clinic will be held at the health department and is open to anyone 18 years and older. The fee for the flu vaccination is $20.

Earlier clinics were cancelled due to shipment delays. “These delays make people anxious because they have legitimate concerns about their health. Right now we are seeing widespread 2009 H1N1 flu and no seasonal flu activity,” said Diane O’Hora, Supervising Public Health Educator for the Broome County Health Department. “There is still time to get vaccinated. It’s not too late.” In the Northern hemisphere, winter is the time for flu. The timing and duration of flu seasons vary. While flu outbreaks can happen as early as October, most of the time influenza activity peaks in January or later.
The health department plans to schedule more clinics and encourages the public to call its seasonal flu clinic information line at 607.778.3911, option 2, or to check its website at after November 30, 2009, for clinics that will take place in December.
The pneumonia shot will also available for Medicare Part B recipients aged 65 and older at this clinic. There will be no out of pocket fee for the flu or pneumonia shots for Medicare Part B recipients. If you are covered by traditional Medicare Part B, your flu shot will be covered.  This year the health department will also bill Excellus Medicare Blue PPO and Today's Options by American Progressive.  If you have one of these Medicare Advantage programs your shot will be covered.  No other Medicare Advantage programs will be covered at this time.
Parents should seek flu immunizations for children at their regular medical provider. If you do not have a regular medical provider for your child, call 607.778.2839 to make an appointment for your child to receive a seasonal flu shot.
