Broome County Congratulates Windsor High School Students for Their Efforts in Promoting Traffic Safety

BINGHAMTON N.Y. – In the spring of 2009, the New York State Association of Traffic Safety Boards conducted a public service announcement (PSA) contest for all 9 – 12 graders in New York State. The purpose of the contest was to identify five radio spots that will persuade teens to make life-saving choices to prevent injuries and deaths due to car crashes. Entries consisted of a 30 second PSA and could be on the topic of either drowsy driving, safety belt use, driving distractions, impaired driving or speeding/aggressive driving.

For the first time since the contest’s inception, a winning team has been selected from Broome County. Congratulations to Rachael La Mantia and Jeri Smith from Windsor High School who submitted a PSA on driving distractions and was selected out of 172 entries from around the state. The team has received a monetary award of $100, a certificate from the state and was recognized by the Broome County Legislature at their June 18th session. At this session, each student was presented with a proclamation from Broome County. Rachael and Jeri are both students of Mrs. Wardell who teaches business and computer skills at Windsor High School and who utilized this contest as a class assignment. The Broome County Traffic Safety Board would like to recognize Windsor High School for helping us promote safe driving among teen drivers. The Broome County Traffic Safety Board will also be working with area radio stations to have the winning PSAs played locally.
