The EMC is a registered participant in the International River and Coastal Clean Up Day sponsored in New York State by the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society and internationally by the Ocean Conservancy. Clean up events are an important occasion for informing the public about the condition of the environment and for bringing people together as stewards to improve environmental quality.

 

Last year, 314 volunteers collected over 3 tons of litter and debris at 23 locations along Broome County waterways. These participants were among the 9,917 volunteers from New York who played a part in the International Coastal Cleanup. Overall, 390,881 volunteers in 104 countries and locations around the world, as well as in 42 US states and the District of Columbia, collected an amazing 6.8 million pounds of debris.  Of the 43 items tracked during the cleanup, the top three items of trash found in 2008 were cigarette butts, plastic bags, and food wrapper/containers.
