Preston Proclaims National Nursing Home Week In Broome

(Vestal, NY) – Broome County Executive Debbie Preston today took part in the celebration of National Nursing Home Week, by serving as guest BINGO caller at Willow Point Nursing Home.
“Everyone in Broome County has a connection to a local nursing home; they hold a special place in our hearts and provide a vital service to our community,” said Broome County Executive Debbie Preston. “It is important that we recognize the efforts of our nursing home staff and honor the residents this week and every week.”
BINGO is one of many activities that residents participate in at Willow Point. While most of the interaction and programs take place inside the nursing home, there are many opportunities to do a variety of things, including fishing, taking in a baseball game, or picnicking in the park.
Activities have long been a part of the services provided to residents at Willow Point. The role of helping residents improve their quality of life through structured and adapted recreational activities is a chief component of the daily mission of the nursing home.
“The Activities Staff has a mission to maintain and even regain a person’s ability to do the things they did during their life before moving to our nursing home,” said Willow Point Nursing Home Administrator Kurt Apthorpe. “Sometimes we can help them to do more than they were doing even at home.”
Other special events planned for National nursing Home Week at Willow Point include:
Ø Grand Reopening of the newly renovated Activities Area, with an Ice Cream Social;
Ø Visit from the furry friends of Animal Adventure;
Ø Visit by area school children;
Ø Special Casino Program with games and prizes; and
Ø Week-long Scavenger Hunt, highlighting the building and grounds.
National Nursing Home Week takes place form May 12th – 18th.
