Preston Announces Enhancements To BC Transit Service

(Binghamton, NY) – Broome County Executive Debbie Preston today announced enhancements to BC Transit Services. She was joined by Public Transportation Commissioner George Bagnetto.

“In January changes went into effect that negatively impacted thousands of Broome County residents.  These were cuts to routes and schedules made by the previous administration before leaving office at the end of the year,” said Broome County Executive Debbie Preston. “In response from the feedback from the public, we studied our routes and schedules at great length, and made necessary adjustments to positively impact those who rely on our services.”

“Access to quality public transportation to Broome County residents is vital to our community,” said Public Transportation Commissioner George Bagnetto. “The County Executive made that clear when she rode a BC Transit in February with our customers.  We are continually examining our routes and schedules to provide the best possible service to Broome County.”

The Route Enhancements that effect on Monday, June 25th, 2012, are:

Ø  Routes #3 and #23 will have a new stop at the intersection of Carol Street and Hawley Street on both in-bound and out-bound trips.

Ø  Route #5 will use Telegraph Street instead of Mill Street on both in-bound and out-bound trips.

Ø  Route #57, the Shoppers Special, will use Riverside Drive after departing the Oakdale Mall servicing the stop at Lourdes Hospital.

Ø  Routes #5, #12, #15 and #35 will be on a 40-minute departure from BC Junction, opposed to the current 45-minute departure.  The #3 or #23 will line up with these departures.

Ø  There will be a 9pm regular inbound 35 “M” starting on Washington Avenue in Endicott to the BC Junction.  After the bus arrives at BC Junction it will continue on the drop off passengers by request on the following routes:

·         #40 Chenango Street as far as Old State Road.

·         #28 Carlisle Apartments, Broad Avenue, Robinson Street between Brandywine Highway and Greater Binghamton Health Center.

·         #12 Saratoga Apartments, Tompkins Street, Conklin Avenue.

·         #5 Vestal Avenue between Telegraph Street to Route 434.

Preston and Bagnetto also announced two upcoming hearings regarding potential changes to routes and fares.

Members of the public who utilize BC Transit are encouraged to attend the public hearings on Thursday, June 28, at 9:00am and Monday, July 16, 2012, at 4:00pm at the Broome County Office Building on the 6th Floor Legislative Chambers.
