Preston & Libous Announce Completion Of $12.9 Million Project At Greater Binghamton Airport

(Maine, NY) – Broome County Executive Debbie Preston, Senator Tom Libous and Broome County Aviation Commissioner Carl Beardsley Jr today announced the completion of the $12.9 million Runway Safety Improvement and Runway Extension Project at the Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM). They were joined by representatives from the offices of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Rep. Richard Hanna, as well as McFarland-Johnson President Rich Brauer.
“This massive construction project at BGM makes our airport safer and makes it easier for larger aircraft to fly in and out of our airport,” said Broome County Executive Debbie Preston. “Not only did this project support 115 jobs right here in Broome County; it will help grow our region as we continue to work on expanded air service at BGM.”
“This project is not only about safety, it’s also about creating jobs and careers,” said Senator Tom Libous. “This project makes it easier for companies to do business in our community. Attracting businesses and job creators to our region has always been our focus, and improving our airport’s capabilities is a big step forward.”
The newly completed construction project lasted roughly 18 months, it included two major components:
§ Runway 16-34 has been extended to 7,300 feet, improving operational capabilities of the airport.
§ The Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS) has been replaced. The EMAS sits at the end of the runway, and serves as a safeguard for aircraft in the event they overrun the runway. The EMAS, first installed in 2002, is recommended by the Federal Aviation Administration to be replaced every 10 years. BGM was one of the first airports in the nation to install an EMAS.
The projects required no Broome County taxpayer support.

  • Total Project Cost:                $12,960,987

"The additional runway length and new safety upgrades at BGM are real improvements that will help attract new commercial routes and more general aviation,” said U.S. Rep. Richard Hanna. “And that helps grow our economy in the Southern Tier."
"I applaud Broome County for its commitment to growing the airport and look forward to supporting future upgrades that will create even more jobs and economic growth in our community
“The runway safety area improvement project will enhance BGM’s operational capabilities and maintain the highest level of airfield safety for our customers,” said Carl Beardsley.   “This important project would not have been possible without the across the level support we received from each level of government.”
