County Clerk Warns of Deed Solicitation Letters

The County Clerk's Office has received a number of calls from concerned Broome County  residents regarding deed solicitation letters they have received from companies such as "New York Record Retrieval" that offer to secure a certified copy of the deed to their property for "only" $59.95.

It may seem like a tempting offer, but Broome County residents should be aware that the same information can be obtained directly from the Broome County Clerk's Office for only $5.20 for up to 8 pages.  Residents can also purchase a regular (non-certified) copy of their deed for $1.35 directly from the County Clerk's website by visiting: http://www.gobcclerk.com    To simply view the document on-line costs nothing.  Companies like New York Record Retreival actually purchase your deed from us for $5.20 and turn around and re-sell it to you for $59.50!

Because this type of solicitation had become so prevalent, the New York State Association of County Clerks worked to get legislation passed that required deed solicitation companies to add wording to solicitation letters stating that the same deed could be purchased in the local County Clerk's Office for between $4 and $20.  Governor Patterson signed the legislation into law on October 7, 2008.

If you would like a certified copy of your deed, please visit the Broome County Clerk's Office or call 778-2451.
