Preston, Broome County Recognizes Medal of Honor Recipients

Binghamton, NY – Broome County Executive Debbie Preston teamed up with local Veterans and the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena Board to recognize the accomplishments of six Medal of Honor recipients from Broome County.

The Medal of Honor is the highest award given out to service members in the military.  It’s awarded for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty.

“These men didn’t think twice before doing what they had to do to protect their fellow soldiers and their country,” says Broome County Executive Debbie Preston.  “These men deserve to be remembered and honored for their ultimate sacrifice.”

The recipients include:

-          General John Robinson – Civil War - U.S. Army (Binghamton)

-          Sgt. Major Amos Cummings – Civil War – U.S. Army (Conklin)

-          Pvt. Albert Sale – Indian Wars – U.S. Army (Broome County)

-          General William Sage – Philippine Insurrection – U.S. Army (Centerville)

-          Sgt. Lawrence Peters – Vietnam War – U.S. Marine Corps (Conklin)

-          Sgt. Lester Stone – Vietnam War – U.S. Army (Harpursville)

Memorials for each were unveiled and read during the ceremony.  They will be placed in the All Wars Memorial outside of the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

Lynda and Shirley Peters, sisters of Sgt. Lawrence Peters, and Mrs. Dorris Stone, Gold Star mother of Lester Stone, attended today’s ceremony.

The Medals of Honor for both Peters and Stone were also on display.

“To be able to have their Medals of Honor on hand is a very special thing,” says local Marine Veteran Joe Laughney. “And a special thanks to the Peters family and the Stone family for allowing us to display the medals and share them with the community.”

Army Sergeant Gary Biekrich, a Medal of Honor recipient from the Vietnam War, was the keynote speaker for the event.
