NYS STOP DWI Crackdown Campaign and National Impaired Driving Enforcement Effort

"Over the Limit Under Arrest"  August21st - September 7th

(Binghamton, NY) Law enforcement officials gathered today at the Broome County Sheriff's Office to announce the upcoming statewide STOP DWI Crackdown Campaign, which is part of the National Impaired Driving Enforcement Effort “Over the Limit Under Arrest”. This concentrated effort will take place August 21st to September 7th.

 
Broome County Sherriff David Harder was joined by representatives from Broome County Police agencies and the New York State Police to discuss their efforts as part of the local and national “Over the Limit Under Arrest” campaign . During this enforcement effort, local and state police will be establishing checkpoints and will be cautiously monitoring motorists.  
 
“Broome County has made significant progress in the effort to combat impaired driving,” said James May Broome County STOP DWI Coordinator and Chairman of the STOP-DWI Association of New York. “Our community’s participation in the national enforcement effort keeps our roadways safer and continues to remind the public about the serious consequences associated with driving while under the influence of alcohol or dugs.”
 
During the 1980's on average 13 people died each year in Broome County due to drunk driving. In the 1990's, the annual average declined to 5 per year. Since 2000, Broome County has averaged 3 DWI fatalities each year.
