Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force conducts operation targeting sale of alcoholic beverages to minors

On Friday evening, June 14, 2013 members of the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force in conjunction with Broome County STOP-DWI and the Broome County Health Department-KYDS Coalition conducted an operation targeting the sale of alcoholic beverages to underage children.

“The KYDS Coalition, which works to reduce youth substance abuse in Broome County, conducts a survey of young adults every other year, which shows that 47 percent of kids say it’s easy to obtain alcohol in our area,” says KYDS Coalition Project Coordinator Melinda Kmetz. “Of those surveyed, 22 percent report receiving alcohol from someone over 21." The mission of the Shoulder Tap operation is to reduce the consumption of, and access to, alcohol by deterring adults from furnishing it to young people, as well as raising public awareness about the problem.

A total of nine (9) establishments were checked during the operation, resulting in three subjects being arrested. Knowing that the child was under 21 years of age, each of the three subjects did agree to purchase alcohol for them. Each subject did take money from an underage child who was voluntarily working at the direction of law enforcement and proceed to purchase alcohol for them and did provide them with the alcohol. Each subject was issued an appearance ticket to appear in court at a later date to answer the charge.
