Broome County Announces Details of 2013 Mirabito STOP-DWI Holiday Classic

Tournament held Dec. 27-30th at Veterans Memorial Arena

(Binghamton, NY) –Broome County Executive Debbie Preston, Binghamton City School officials, event sponsors, tournament organizers and local high school teams today attended a news conference to announce details of the 22nd annual Mirabito STOP-DWI Holiday Classic, which will take place December 27th-30th at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
“The Mirabito STOP-DWI Holiday Classic is a much anticipated holiday tradition that delivers an important message through an impressive high school basketball competition,” said Broome County Executive Debbie Preston. “We are very excited to mark the 22nd anniversary of the event and the second with Mirabito as the title sponsor. Brooms County thanks Mirabito Energy Products, tournament organizers and sponsors of the Holiday Classic, who continue to make this showcase event possible.”
“Each year the Tournament mixes top flight competition with numerous seminars to highlight the serious consequences of driving while impaired and we have a tremendous field for 2013 in terms of competition and speakers,” said Chris Marion, Tournament Director and Broome County STOP-DWI Program coordinator. “I can’t say enough about the support we have received from the Mirabito family by making a good product even better.”
“First and foremost, spreading the STOP-DWI message is so important in our community and this is a great opportunity to do that,” said Joe Mirabito, CEO of Mirabito. “We are honored to be partnered with Broome County on this premier event and look forward to seeing competitive basketball at the Arena this year and in the years to come.”
The Mirabito STOP-DWI Holiday Classic is recognized as one of the premier holiday high school basketball tournaments in the Northeast. The Holiday Classic will again feature a national division and two four team regional divisions. For 2013, the Tournament will again feature reduced prices for tournament passes as well as a new student pass at a deeply discounted rate. Tournament passes (20 games) cost $42 for adults and $18 for students (6-18 yrs old). Session tickets (3 or 4 games) cost $10.00 for adults and $5 for students and children 5 and under are free. All games will be held at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
One major enhancement to the 2013 Tournament is the inclusion of the Aldo Rossi Jr Memorial Police v. Police basketball game being held in conjunction with the 3-Point and Slam-Dunk Competition. Port Dickinson Police Officer Aldo Rossi Jr. was tragically stuck and killed by a drunk driver in 2008 on Route 7 in the Village of Port Dickinson. The memorial game and competition will take place beginning at 5.30pm on Friday, December 27th at the Veterans Memorial Arena. This will be the first chance for area fans to see the players display their skills. The event has been held during the day at Binghamton High School in the past.
The education component of the Tournament has also been enhanced to include a comprehensive traffic safety message focusing on impaired, distracted and safe driving. Educational speakers for the 2013 tournament include:
  • Jonathan Mueller presenting “Jonathan Against Drunk Driving” which focuses on his experiences after being hit head-on by a drunk driver in 1998;
  • Jacy Good presenting “Hang Up and Drive” which focuses on her life after a crash caused by a distracted driver that claimed the life of both of her parents in 2008;
  • Visions Federal Credit Union presenting “Financial Literacy for Young Adults;”
  • Broome County STOP-DWI, Traffic Safety Program, and New York State Police presenting “Hang Up, Buckle Up, Stay Sober, Just Drive” which focuses on impaired and distracted driving as well as seat belt use;
  • Covington Holmes Head Coach Jason Booher presenting “From Tragedy to Championships: Surviving the Nation’s Worst Drinking and Driving Crash” which focuses on the consequences of drinking and driving, as well as how to rebound from a tragedy to become successful later on in life.
Those attending the Mirabito STOP-DWI Holiday Classic are reminded to visit the silent auction being held on the Arena concourse on December 27th & 30th. Items including merchandise, sports equipment and gift certificates will be up for auction to support the Crime Victims Assistance Center.
